THE GRADUATE EDUCATION PROGRAM OF PHILIPPINE

NORMAL UNIVERSITY, AGUSAN CAMPUS: BASIS FOR

PROPOSAL FOR ACCREDITATION

THE PROBLEM

         This study is a descriptive method of research confined to the level of quality of the Graduate Education Program of Philippine Normal University, Agusan Campus. To determine the comparison between the actualities and intentions of the said program, the CHED Standards, Educational Leadership, Actualization of Vision and Mission and Administrative Support and the PACUCOA accreditation instrument were used to evaluate the eight areas of concern and were analyzed to identify the development needs of the Graduate Education Program of PNU-AC. The respondents in the study consisted of the professors and graduate students of the Graduate Education Program.

        The instrument utilized the rating scale of 1 to 5 to indicate the condition of a particular item in the relation to the different components of accreditation standards. The statistical techniques included mean computation, F – test and the significant of correlation with the use of SSPS (Statistical Product of Correlations and Services) Program.

FINDINGS

1. The Level of Quality of the Graduate Education Program of PNU-AC as Rated by the Professors and Graduate Students.

1.1 Goals and Objectives

Nine (9) out of twelve (12) or 75% of the items were rated very good by the respondents. Three (3) out of twelve (12) or 25% of the items were rated good.

1.2 Faculty

Rank and tenure, professional performance, salaries and fringe benefits, selection of faculty members, teaching assignments, academic qualifications rated very good by the respondents, while faculty development and faculty involvement rated good.

1.3 Curriculum and Instruction

Program of studies and curriculum, instructional materials, procedures and techniques, evaluation and grading, graduation requirements and administrative support obtained very good, while community services and involvement obtained the lowest rating but was still good.

1.4 Research

Human resource, orientation and quality were rated very good, Support from the administration ethics of research, activities, dissemination and utilization were rated good.

1.5 Students

Retention and admission were rated very good while students services was rated good.

1.6 Library

Administration and staffing, financial support, holdings, organization and maintenance of collections, services and physical facilities were rated good.

1.7 Administrative Organization

Administrative records and administration organization were rated very good, while planning, financial management and academic and scholarly connection were rated good.

1.8 Other Resources

Human resources, physical resources and laboratories were rated good by the respondents.

2. Significant Difference in the Rating of Professors and Graduate Students on the level of Quality of the Graduate Education Program of the eight areas of concerns.

              There were no significant differences between the professors’ and graduate students’ rating on the level of quality of he graduate education program on the areas of Goals and Objectives, Faculty, Curriculum and Instructions, Research, and Other Resources.

             There were significant difference between the ratings of professors and graduated students on the graduate education program on the areas of Students and Administrative Organization and

             There was a highly significant difference between the professors’ and graduate students’ ratings on the level of quality of the graduate educations program on the area of Library.

3. The Degree of External and Internal Factors Manifest in the Graduate Program.

Vision and mission was rated very good while CHED Standards, educational leadership, and administrative support were rated good.

4. Significant Correlation between the Quality of the Graduate Education Programs of PNU-AC

Compliance to CHED Standards, educational leadership, actualization of vision and mission and administrative support have significant correlation on the quality of graduate education program of PNU-AC with the PAASCU Instrument.

CONCLUSION

Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions are drawn:

1. The Graduate Education Program of this Institution under study had reached the very satisfactory level on the areas of goals and objectives, faculty, curriculum and instructions, and satisfactory on the areas of research, students, library, administration organization and other resources.

2. The common field experiences of graduate students and professors and their exposure to the graduate programs enabled them to have congruent perceptions of the quality of graduate programs.

3. There are marked differences of perceptions of the respondents on the areas of students, library and administrative organization.

4. Some items in almost all areas have not been provided or just functioning adequately.

5. Compliance to CHED standards, educational leadership, implementation of the vision and mission and adequate administrative support all contribute to quality of graduate programs at PNU Prosperidad Campus.

RECOMMENDATIONS

In light of the aforementioned findings and conclusions of this study, the following recommendations are hereby offered for consideration.

A. Administrator of PNU

1. For faculty area, provision of continuing faculty development program and involvement of faculty in the formulation/review of goals and objectives as well as in the evaluation of curricular and other programs of school.

2. For research area, provision of support staff as enumerators, encoder and typist, expenses for data analysis and other research activities, and provision of seminars, workshops and lectures for students and faculty.

3. For students area, improvement of students services such as opportunities for financial assistance, actual operation system for directing/counseling and auxiliary services like guidance, dental and medical.

4. For library area, improvement of library administration and staffing, financial support, holdings, organization and maintenance collections, services, and physical facilities.

5. For administrative area, improvement of administrative organization especially on planning, financial management and academic and scholarly connections.

6. Improvements of other resources such as human resources, deliberate, allocate and implement the proposed intervention program.

B. Head of Graduate School

1. There’s a need for regular orientation of both new faculty and graduate students.

2. There’s a need to assign a member of the faculty to take charge of the program for community extension services and involvement.

3. The Graduate School to link with a research center.

C. Faculty

The faculty members to produce a fair amount of quality researches regularly.
