THE STUDENT TEACHING PROGRAM OF THE PHILIPPINE

NORMAL UNIVERSITY-AGUSAN CAMPUS: BASIS

FOR AN INTERVENTION PROGRAM

Dr. Adelyne M. Costelo-Abrea

THE PROBLEM

The study wished to carry out an evaluation in the student Teaching Program of the Philippine Normal University-Agusan Campus. The results formed the basis for Intervention Design for Planned Changes.

The study aimed to know the profile of the three groups of respondents, i.e. supervising instructors, cooperating educators and student teachers according to selected demographic variables. Moreover, it sought to know the status of the Student Teaching program of the Philippine Normal University-Agusan Campus as assessed by the three groups of respondents. Furthermore, it wanted to know the significant difference in the assessment of the student teaching program as rated by the respondents and the significant relationship between the profile of the respondents and the effectiveness of the Student Teaching Program. Based on the findings of the study, proposed measures to further improve the program were looked into.

The following null hypotheses guided the study at .05 level of significance: that there is no significant difference in the assessment of the three groups of respondents, between the assessment of the BEE and BSE student teachers, between the assessment of the BEE and BSE supervising instructors, between the assessment of the BEE and BSE cooperating educators and no significant relationship between the profile of the respondent and the effectiveness of the Student Teaching Program.

METHODOLOGY

The study utilized the descriptive method using the survey technique. It employed the probability sampling design. Twenty-four (24) Supervising Instructors, one hundred twenty-two (122) Student Teachers, and eighty-one (81) Cooperating Educators did the evaluation.

The statistical techniques used were the Weighted Mean, t-test and Analysis of Variance and Step-Wise Regression Analysis.

THE FINDINGS

On the Profile of Respondents

Most of the cooperating educators and supervising instructors were in their 20’s and 30’s holding their posts for almost a decade. They were qualified to teach with most of them holding master’s degree or earning points for graduate studies. The student teachers belonged to the age range of 20-29. Most of them belonged to the BEE curriculum with some having specialization.

On Assessment of Student Teaching Program

Among the raters, the cooperating educators gave the highest rating followed by the student teachers then the supervising instructors. Most of the components were rated highly except for the component on monitoring and evaluation which was rated poorly.

On the Differences in the Evaluation of the Three Groups

There is a significant difference in the ratings of the three groups of respondents except for the comparison of the assessment of BEE and BSE Cooperating Educators.

On the Relationship Between the Profile of Respondents and Effectiveness of Student Teaching Program

For student teachers and supervising instructors, the profile did not affect their assessment. For the cooperating educators, the years in present position and master’s degree had an influence on their ratings.

On Problems Met

Problems met were negative attitudes of student teachers, cooperating educators and supervising instructors, need for monitoring and evaluation, and inadequate school plant and laboratory facilities.

CONCLUSIONS

The following conclusions were drawn from the findings:

1. In-House Faculty. There is evidence that the Student Teaching Program is handled by young, qualified and dedicated faculty with the able support of equally competent cooperating educators in the field.

2. The implementation of the Student Teaching Program was very satisfactory with the cooperating educators giving the highest rating. The weakness is on monitoring and evaluation. Sectoral grouping is differentiating factor in the evaluation of the student Teaching Program with the cooperating educators giving the highest and the supervising instructors giving the lowest.

3. The personal attributes of the supervising instructors and cooperating educators have no bearing on their ratings of the Student Teaching Program. Cooperating educators who have stayed longer in their position and have advanced degrees tended to give high ratings of the Student Teaching Program.

 RECOMMENDATIONS

On the bases of the findings and conclusions drawn, the following recommendations are presented:

Academic Council

1. That the proposal Intervention Program for Planned Changes be reviewed, modified and approved for immediate implementation for School Year 2002-2003

2. The cooperating educators be given honoraria following the guidelines stipulated in the Memorandum of Agreement. Student teachers will pay a particular amount during enrolment aside from the matriculation fees paid for the honoraria.

3. That monitoring and evaluation of Student Teaching Program be conducted at least annually.

4. That the orientation for BEE and BSE student teachers be merged with particular topics discussed separately.

Research Center

1. That the Department of Research and Extension take the preparatory steps in the conduct of the Evaluation of the student Teaching Program and communicate the results to the stake holders. Efforts should be exerted to strengthen the monitoring and evaluation system of the Student Teaching Program.

2. That further researches be conducted as follow-through of the results.

Supervising Instructors and Cooperating Educator

That the Supervising instructors and cooperating educators will actively participate in the reorientation of their roles, functions and responsibilities in the conduct of the Student Teaching Program.

Student Teachers

That the student teachers will demonstrate desirable values during the internship in order to project a positive image of Philippine Normal University as a Teacher Education Institution.

Researchers

That follow-up study be made to assess the Student Teaching Program after all the recommendations have been implemented and to explore predictors of the effectiveness of the Student Teaching Program.
